MS CIS

Special Circumstances

Graduate Transfer Credits?

Have an MBA?

If you have already earned an MBA, you may be questioning the value of pursuing a second graduate degree. The MS CIS program has admitted MBA graduates in each of its cohorts to date, and these individuals have reported that the degrees are complementary. While there is some overlap in key concepts (e.g., change management, financial decision-making, strategic planning, organizational behavior), examining material in the context of IT management minimizes redundancy. Organizations seek senior IT managers with a strong foundation in both business and technology, thus having both degrees is advantageous in a competitive employment market.

Old GMAT or GRE scores?

GMAT or GRE scores are generally acceptable for a five-year period. Exceptions to this five-year rule will be considered for applicants who successfully completed graduate coursework subsequent to completing one of the test/exams and in cases involving extenuating circumstances. Scores more than five years old are accepted only with the recommendation of the program director and approval of the Graduate Dean.

Still have to take the GMAT or GRE?

You can apply for admission prior to completing the GMAT or GRE. However, any acceptance to the MS CIS program would be conditional pending satisfaction of that admission requirement. With most conditional acceptances, the applicant is expected to successfully complete the pending requirement at least one month prior to beginning the program. Since admission is competitive, preference will be given to applicants satisfying all admission requirements.

Considering a Ph.D?

While the vast majority of MS CIS students plan to continue in their professional careers, a limited number have expressed interest in pursuing a terminal degree (Ph.D. or DBA). Given this interest, the MS CIS Program provides an optional presentation on this topic to each cohort. The presentation examines general requirements for doctoral programs, factors to consider in selecting a doctoral program, forms of financial aid, and career opportunities in academe. To date, two MS CIS alumni have pursued doctoral degrees and both are nearing completion of their programs. Two other alums have applied to doctoral programs and plan to begin their program of study within the coming year.
